ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

My husband I were just talking . . . Our dogs, Scamp and Scout, nine and ten years old, respectively, aren't puppies anymore. They're still healthy and enjoy playing and talking walks. But they've slowed down a little bit.

For some reason this morning, it really hit us that humans outlive their dogs. So we vowed to make every day Scamp and Scout have left – and we hope that's a lot! – fun, happy, and satisfying for them.

We're also committed to keeping them as healthy as possible. What advice do you have for us?

– Elena in DC

Dear Elena,

The dedicated care that your husband and you obviously have for Scamp and Scout may be the most important factor of all when it comes to ensuring their health and happiness. It will motivate you to be attentive to their needs, provide a comfortable and accommodating environment for them, bring them to the veterinarian for their required checkups, and contact your vet's office when you suspect something's wrong with either of them. This article, CARING FOR YOUR SENIOR DOG explains what to expect as your dogs age, and how to help keep your older best friends happy, healthy, and wagging their tails.

Dear Max,

What can I do to keep my dog entertained during the day? Over the summer there was always someone home with Copper but now that the kids are back in school and with both my wife and I at work I worry that she will feel neglected and bored.

Dear Sedentary,

There are lots of things you can do to make Copper's time at home alone pass more quickly and pleasantly. When my people go off to do their important chores, I know now that they'll leave me with fun and relaxing opportunities (depending on my mood) that I can enjoy on my own.

Well first, before they leave, they tire me out with a walk or maybe some playtime. And I often take a snooze after that. But when I wake up, the proactive measures they've taken for me boost my spirits immensely while I'm holding down the fort. Here's an article that offers several steps you can take to keep Copper entertained and relaxed, not bored or stressed, while the rest of the family is out of the house: KEEPING YOUR DOG HAPPY, ACTIVE, AND ENTERTAINED WHILE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ARE AWAY

Max's Mini-Reviews
KONG BLUE: This is one tough toy! The Kong Blue handles all my knock-down, drag-out play and gives me rewards in return. The toy can be filled with treats, so the more I play the more tasty surprises I'll find.

KONG STUFF'N
: Every dog loves treats but the Kong Stuff'n takes it to a new level. It comes in peanut butter or liver flavors (both are delicious) and they help promote healthy skin and coat. A treat that tastes good and will help me look good . . . what more could a dog ask for? It doesn't matter if it's given to me as a treat or added to my Kong Blue; as long as I get some Stuff'n, I'm one happy pooch.
