ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

Should I microchip my dog? Is it safe? Painless?

- Cautious with my Canine
Dear Cautious with my Canine,

I recommend microchipping in combination with giving your dog a collar with an attached ID tag. The former provides permanent ID and the latter provides visible ID. The combination substantially improves your chances of being re-united with your dog if your dog should get lost. Microchipping is very safe, and virtually pain-free as best we can tell. Reported side effects are rare and mild.

For more information on the why's and how's of microchipping your pet, and what microchips can and cannot do, please consult this article, MICROCHIPPING YOUR DOG

Dear Max,

Why do dogs howl?

–Cameron

Dear Cameron,

Howling is a part of our canine vocal repertoire, along with the more conventional bark, growl and whine. It's our way of communicating with other four legged friends and you. To get the full scoop on why we howl and what our calls may mean check out this article: WHY DOGS HOWL

KONG WUBBA FRIENDS: The Kong Wubba Friends interactive squeak toy is built to last. It may look soft and cuddly but don’t be fooled, these friendly guys were made with reinforced stitching for rough and tough play. I can tug, toss & fetch my Kong Wubba friend to my heart’s delight and at the end of the day I’m the one feeling worn out while he still looks like new.

TOP TAG PET ID: I’m not usually the kind of dog that wears accessories but this one comes with a purpose. The Top Tag Pet ID is a high tech pet ID tag that can hold all kinds of important information about me like where I live, medical needs, behavior, photos and more! My humans love it because they know that they’re keeping me safe and I like all the attention I get when other humans see the tag hanging from my collar.
