ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

My husband and I have had our new addition to our family, Kingsley, for about 4 months now. He is a happy pup but I’ve heard that puppies can become infected with worms fairly easily. Kingsley seems to be healthy but I still worry about my little guy. Are there any signs I should look out for?

- Megan
Dear Megan,

Worms, or intestinal parasites, can affect all puppies and dogs. Intestinal parasitism is one of the most common conditions in clinical veterinary practice and is frequently identified in all dogs.

This article, DOG PARASITES, contains more information on the type of parasites that are commonly found in puppies and dogs as well as the clinical signs of infection and proper methods of treatment.

Dear Max,

My human always scolds me when I get into her purse. She says the gum in her purse will make me sick but it smells so good! Is that true?

Dear Mischievous,

I agree with you, gum does smell good! But your human is right, you could suffer from xylitol toxicity if you eat things like gum, mints or even some of those sweet baked goods your human is never willing to share. It may not seem fair but it's better than getting sick. You and your human can learn in this article on Xylitol Toxicity in Dogs.

Max's Mini-Reviews

FURBUSTER DE-SHEDDING TOOL: When I'm looking good I feel good and the Furbuster De-Shedding Tool makes that happen. The Furbuster gets down into my undercoat removing all my loose fur while leaving my coat looking silky smooth. My humans can't help but shower me with love after a good brushing, who can blame them?

FLEA AND TICK SHAMPOO: I'm not very fond of bugs, especially when they're trying to get a free ride on my fur. My humans bathe me with ecoPure Flea and Tick Shampoo because it contains all natural ingredients, which means it's safe for me and my humans while still being tough on those pesky bugs.
