ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

I noticed my dog sniffing around some plants that I realized are not doggy safe and have since fenced in my garden but I’m still worried about my dog getting in and eating a poisonous plant. If I were to catch my dog doing this could I cause him to throw up so he won’t become ill?

-Patricia
Dear Patricia,

If you just saw your pet ingesting something toxic, you may be tempted to try and induce vomiting. But because serious complications can arise, NEVER induce vomiting unless specifically instructed to do so by your veterinarian or by Animal Poison Control.

However, if your vet has advised you to induce vomiting at home, please read this article to understand the risks and follow up care that will be needed.

Dear Max,

I was sniffing around the dining room table looking for leftovers after my humans finished eating dinner and I got scolded. This normally happens but instead of being scolded for looking for food I was scolded for sniffing the bouquet of flowers on the table. Now I can't look for food or sniff flowers, what's wrong my humans?

Dear Scolded,

I often get told not to look for table scraps or spend too much time sniffing around flowers too. I know it seems like our humans have gone nuts but some plants are actually poisonous to dogs and often times they're common plants that can be found in our yard. You and your human can check out this list of POISONOUS PLANTS FOR DOGS to be sure you're always safe.

Max's Mini-Reviews

JOHN PAUL PET INSTANT DETANGLING SPRAY: When my fur gets tangled my humans use John Paul Pet Instant Detangling Spray to get me out of a matted mess. The best part about the spray is that it can be used on both wet and dry fur. Which means my bath time tendrils are tangle free and on those days when there's no time for a bath I can still look my best.

WATER BOTTLE CRUNCHER: I love chomping on water bottles so my humans got me the Water Bottle Cruncher. My humans just have to put an empty water bottle in the canvas sleeve and I can crunch the day away without having to worry about hurting my mouth. The fun never ends with this toy, once I've smashed a bottle to capacity, a new one can be inserted to keep the good times rolling.
