ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

My husband takes our dog Buddy hiking with him in the forest, and last week I noticed Buddy was scratching and licking an oozing sore on his side. On closer inspection I found a perfectly round hole under his wet fur and at first thought it was a bullet hole or a bite wound. I cleaned the area as best I could with some soap and water but it has not healed. When I checked it again today I swear I could see a little white caterpillar inside the hole!

I have made an appointment with the vet but I am worried sick about him and concerned that maybe my husband or I will catch something from him.

-Caterpillar in my dog

Dear Caterpillar in my dog,

You don’t know how close to right you are with your diagnosis of Buddy’s wound. More than likely Buddy has been infested with the larvae of a Cuterebra or bot fly. These flies lay their eggs around rabbit or rodent burrows where unsuspecting dogs and cats can encounter them. When the pet grooms, they can ingest or inhale the eggs which go on to hatch into larvae or young worms. These larvae move to the space under the skin, create a large cyst called a warble, and eventually burrow out creating a breathing hole. This is likely when Buddy started scratching it and when you saw what you thought was a caterpillar coming out for air.

Taking Buddy to the veterinarian is the right thing to do. It is important that you not try to treat this condition at home as grabbing the larvae or squeezing the cyst can lead to severe allergic reactions and even anaphylaxis.

Dear Max,

Why does my dog Buddy insist on sticking his nose in people’s crotches when they come over for a visit? It is so embarrassing—to all of us, except Buddy.

Dear E & C,

Humans don’t like the crotch sniffing thing, but I’m with Buddy on this one. The best way to figure out who’s coming to visit is to get up-close and personal by smelling their nether region. Humans often want to look us right in the eyes, which for us canines is rarely the smartest way to greet a stranger.

We get important information on who’s visiting us by smelling them. Truthfully, we can do it from a distance, but it’s canine nature to go right for the crotch.

Read this article about why dogs sniff privates to learn more about why we do it and what you can do to create a good balance for all.

Max's Mini-Reviews

KOOL DOGS ICE TREAT MAKER : This toy is great for those dog days of summer. My human puts yummy treats and some of my favorite chew toys in the bucket with water, then freezes it and leaves it out in the yard for me to work on all day. Not only am I staying cool by licking the ice block, but I get treats and toys. What dog wouldn't love that?

ZANIES BERBER BABIES : The Zanies Berber Babies are almost too cute to chew—just kidding! I don't know any dog who could turn their nose up to these fun fetch toys. After a play filled afternoon, they are the perfect toy to cuddle with in your doggy bed or your humans bed when they're not looking.
