ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

My mother in law’s dog was just diagnosed with cancer. The only symptom was that he was vomiting occasionally and losing weight. My own dog vomits occasionally. She is 4 years old and is otherwise in good health. Should I worry?

-Linda

Dear Linda,

In young dogs like yours, vomiting is often benign and self limiting. She may be eating something that doesn’t quite agree with her (fatty treats, rich table scraps, or nasty unmentionables picked up from the back yard or the woods). She may have a mild food allergy or a treatable condition called Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Click here to learn more about the causes and treatment of vomiting in dogs. And if you’re still concerned, it’s best to contact your veterinarian.

Dear Max,

I love my dog but he's not exactly the most obedient dog at the doggy park. How can I train my dog to sit so I won't have anymore mishaps when I take him out and about?

–Cody

Dear Cody,

At one time, I wasn't the best behaved dog on the block either. But my human worked with me and now I'm an excellent listener and follow commands—even without treats, although I wouldn't mind getting treats every time. Check out this article and video on How to Train Your Dog to Sit.

Max's Mini-Reviews

GRUNTLEYS : The Gruntleys do just what they say—they grunt. Whenever I hear that piggy grunt I know it's play time. Their soft fleece bellies are gentle for sensitive chewers while their canvas covered arms and legs are great for more aggressive play.

KONG ZOOM GROOM : I love being brushed. There's nothing like a good grooming session to get you looking and feeling great, that's why I love the Kong Zoom Groom. Its soft rubber bristles promote healthy skin and hair growth while removing my loose fur. It can also be used as a bathing tool, doggy spa day anyone?

DOG FACT
Dogs are colorblind—True or False?

False. Dogs can see color, but just not the same vivid color scheme as we humans can see. A dog's vision—in terms of being able to make out colors—can be compared to that of a human's vision at dusk.

TO QUOTE:

"Dogs feel very strongly that they should
always go with you in the car, in case the need
should arise for them to bark violently
at nothing right in your ear."
