ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

My black lab has been shaking hear head and scratching her ear. There is lots of black gunk and even some blood in it. Should I be alarmed?

-Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

Your dog is most likely suffering from an all-too-common affliction, otitis externa, otherwise known as an ear infection. Dogs are commonly prone to ear infections. This problem is especially common in flop-eared dogs (such as yours). Click here to learn more about ear infections and their treatment.

Dear Max,

This is gross but can you tell me why my dog likes to eat poop?

–Miranda

… … … …

Dear Miranda,

That is gross and I've never ever done that before. Ok, I've done it! I think you'll find this article on Coprophagy In Dogs helpful. It covers why dogs like to eat poop and strategies to prevent that behavior. I must admit, I feel better about not being the only dog that has taken a bite or two—just don't tell my humans.

Max's Mini-Reviews

HUMUNGA STACHE : I am all for entertaining and this toy puts my acts over the top. The Humunga Stache is one part ball toy and one part laughs! The minute I picked up this toy by the end with the ball and looked up my humans were rolling on the floor laughing. Now I know what to do when I want my picture taken.

C.E.T. ENZYMATIC ORAL HYGIENE CHEWS FOR DOGS : I love treats, what dog doesn't? My humans say these treats are extra special because they also help keep my teeth in tip top shape. I don't much about teeth but I do know that these chews taste great and I'll be on my best behavior to get more.

DOG FACT
Ancient Egyptians revered their dogs. When a pet dog would die, the owners shaved off their eyebrows, smeared mud in their hair, and mourned aloud for days.
