ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

I know crate training is the best way to housebreak a puppy, but I can’t get my puppy to use the crate. Every time I put him in it, he cries so much it breaks my heart. I feel like I’m being cruel. What should I do?

-Kathy

Dear Kathy,

The sound of a puppy crying can be heartbreaking but if there is ever a time not to give in it is during crate training. Find out how a little tough love can go a long way in this article.

Dear Max,

My husband and I are expecting our first baby. We have Bailey, a 3-year-old Golden Retriever. I’ve heard Goldens are good with kids, but I’m still not sure how Bailey is going to react. What are your recommendations?

–Stressed in Seattle

Dear Stressed,

Well as you know, I’m quite biased about Golden Retrievers! And you’re right, most of us are super laid-back and love everyone. Still it’s good that you’re planning ahead. A child can be quite unnerving to any dog who’s not used to them. And a new baby can turn one’s life upside down! Max's Mini-Reviews

PURE BITES TREATS : I am a sucker for a good treat. Call me a people pleaser (or a bottomless pit) either way these are delicious! My humans like them because they only have one ingredient, I like them because well, they taste good!

TUFF LOCK COLLAR : I know I'm looking mighty fine when I have my Tuff Lock collar on, all the humans at the dog park seem to stare.

Dogs have three eyelids. The third lid, called a nictitating membrane or “haw,” keeps the eye lubricated and protected.
