ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

Last weekend my dog was vomiting, a lot. I was very worried but luckily there is an emergency vet clinic near my home and I was able to get her the care she needed. This emergency got me wondering about what could have happened if I wasn't able to get her into the clinic. Do you have any tips on first aid for dogs?

Dear Prepared,

It is great that you were able to get your dog the care she needed in an emergency. Although there is no substitution for a licensed veterinarian when it comes to a sick or injured pet there are some basics that all dog owners should know when faced with an emergency situation. Check out this comprehensive article on First Aid for Dogs.

Dear Max,

I was in the backyard with my human just doing my thing sniffing and what not, when I found this really cool looking toad. Before I could get any closer and check the little guy out I found myself locked up in the house. What gives? I wasn't going to eat him... well maybe I wasn't.

Dear Buddy,

The same thing happened to me! At first I was upset, it's my yard after all but then I found out that some toads can be poisonous. So it is likely that you weren't being punished just being well cared for.

Max's Mini-Reviews

BOW OW FIRST AID KIT : This is the ultimate doggy care kit—and I am all about being cared for. The first aid kit contains everything a prepared human needs for cuts, bites, ears, scratches and much more. I feel more free to explore now that I know my humans have a first aid kit handy—just don't tell them.

HEEBIE JEEBIES : Heebie Jeebies is no ordinary toy. I love its four squeakers, to me, the more squeakers the better! My humans like that the toy is stuffing free. I tend to get a little overzealous with my toys and can sometimes leave a trail of stuffing in my wake. But with no stuffing there is no messy clean up for my humans which means more playtime for me
