ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

Do you know anything about the rattlesnake vaccine they have for dogs? I live in the desert and see lots of rattlesnakes. I am worried about my dog Rickey because he is very curious and is always nosing around where he shouldn’t be.

-Matt (Companion to Curious Rickey)

Dear Matt,

I live in the country in California where there are plenty of rattlesnakes and I vaccinate my dogs regularly. I love the vaccine, and have heard one wonder story after another on how it helps save dogs that have been bitten by rattlesnakes.

All vaccines have their risks, and you should discuss the vaccine with your veterinarian first, but I think it is an amazing product and I am so happy it is available.

My neighbor’s dog was bitten by a rattler and fortunately was vaccinated with the Red Rock Biologics vaccine. The vet told them the vaccine probably saved the dog’s life.

That brings up a good point. Even if Rickey is vaccinated, if he is bitten by a rattlesnake, it is an emergency and he should receive veterinary care immediately.

If any of our readers have comments about the vaccine, please email us so we can post your comments.

Dear Max,

I really liked the myths article in the last newsletter. Do you have more?

Dear Jeanine,

Thanks! I've got part two of Myths and Misconceptions right here! This time I take a bite out of myths like what the dark spots on a dogs tongue means and why us dogs sometimes eat grass.

Max's Mini-Reviews

RUFFY FLAPPY : This toy is pawsome! I love to sink my teeth into it, make it squeak and shake it all around. It appeals to all my senses—well, all but smell and taste if it were filled with treats I would be in doggy heaven.

KONG ZOOM GROOM : I love being brushed. There's nothing like a good grooming session to get you looking and feeling great, that's why I love the Kong Zoom Groom. Its soft rubber bristles promote healthy skin and hair growth while removing my loose fur. It can also be used as a bathing tool, doggy spa day anyone?
