ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

The other day my dog, a 6 lb.Yorkie, fell down off the arm of the couch and was unconscious for several seconds. I felt completely panicked, and had no idea what to do. Luckily she perked right up on her own and the vet said she was fine. But next time I want to be prepared. Is there CPR for dogs?

-Jamie

Dear Jamie,

That sounds like a scary situation with a happy ending. CPR can indeed be performed on dogs, and it’s a great skill to learn now, BEFORE a crisis occurs. CPR is used to restore life to an animal (or human) whose breathing or heartbeat has stopped. Sounds like your dog recovered on her own but others aren’t so lucky. CPR can literally mean the difference between life and death

Dear Max,

I just got a new puppy named Spark. Spark is a great dog except for one thing—he nips. I know that most puppies will nip but I don't want him to think that is kind of behavior is okay. What should I do?

Dear Daniel,

Since us dogs don't have hands to explore the world with we often use our noses and mouths. A little mouthy play is okay every now and then but I see why you don't want Spark to get used to this behavior. Check out this article on dog nipping to nip Sparks behavior in the bud.

Max's Mini-Reviews

TIGER DREAMZ LUXURY BED : You won't know luxury until you're snuggled up on a Tiger Dreamz bed. It is a little slice of naptime heaven! Nothing feels better than having the ultra soft faux fur under my paws. In fact, it's so soft I've caught my humans trying to steal my bed as a leg warmer—not going to happen on my watch. The humans at SuperHappyPets.com think all dogs should have one of these beds so they're on sale for a limited time, get your paws on one while you can!

HUMUNGA STACHE : I am all for entertaining and this toy puts my acts over the top. The Humunga Stache is one part ball toy and one part laughs! The minute I picked up this toy by the end with the ball and looked up my humans were rolling on the floor laughing. Now I know what to do when I want my picture taken.
