ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

It has been a very hot summer and I'm worried that my dog is uncomfortable under all that fur. Is it okay to shave my dog?

-Alexis

Dear Alexis,

Shaving your dog may seem like a good idea but the truth is that shaving may be detrimental to your dogs comfort and health. Dog's coats are designed to capture air and use it as an insulator. During the summer it holds the heat at bay, and helps them regulate their body temperature. Without an insulating layer of fur dogs can be more susceptible to heat stroke and at a greater risk of sunburn and skin cancer.

Dear Max,

Are dogs color blind?

–David

… … … …

Dear David,

We don’t see all the colors of the rainbow, but we see more than just black and white. We see most colored objects as yellow, blue, or gray. We can see just as much color as humans who are called ‘colorblind.’ Our ability to see certain colors is based on how our eyes are made. Click here to read more about the anatomy of a dog’s eye.

Max's Mini-Reviews

YADA YADAS : Forget regular squeak toys, the Yada Yada toys talk! Each character "talks" in its own language, meaning the fish blows bubbles, the duck quacks and the frog lets out a ribbit. Whenever I hear my Yada talk I know it's time to play.

PET TOP : I love going on long walks but I get thirsty in this summer heat. Luckily, my humans are always willing to share their water with me by putting the Pet Top on their water bottle. We can both stay hydrated without any water waste or exchange of human cooties. You know you humans have them!
