ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

My groomer noticed that my dog is losing hair and has also gained a lot of weight. She said my dog might be hypothyroid. I made an appointment with the vet, but meanwhile, should I be worried?

-Lauren

Dear Lauren,

Hypothyroidism is a common hormonal condition in dogs that can cause hair loss, weight gain, and a host of other symptoms. The good news is that it’s very treatable with a simple pill, so try not to worry!

Hypothyroidism is diagnosed with blood tests. It can present a diagnostic challenge because symptoms are often subtle and mimic other diseases. It sometimes takes a series or combination of tests for your vet to arrive at a diagnosis. Click here to learn more about Hypothyroidism.

Dear Max,

My family just moved outside of town and now we're living a ranch lifestyle. Everyone loves it—especially our dog. He has his lay of the land but I'm worried about ticks. How do I remove them if one becomes attached to my dog?

–Mike

I'm a ranch dog too so I know all about those pesky ticks! Have no fear, we have an article on how to remove ticks so you can keep your dog protected while still enjoying his new surroundings.

Max's Mini-Reviews

KONG WUBBA FRIENDS : The Kong Wubba Friends interactive squeak toy is built to last. It may look soft and cuddly but don't be fooled, these friendly guys were made with reinforced stitching for rough and tough play. I can tug, toss & fetch my Kong Wubba friend to my heart's delight and at the end of the day I'm the one feeling worn out while he still looks like new.

CHARMING BALLOON : These toys are so much fun! They look like balloon animals but they sure won't pop at first bite. These squeaker toys are my new favorite thing to play fetch with.
