ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

My dog loves chewing leftover bones, but my fiancée recently told me that it isn’t safe. I know not to give chicken bones, because they can splinter. Are beef or pork bones OK?

-Jay

Dear Jay,

Dogs love bones, but bones don’t always love them. Leftover food bones can pose a particular risk because they tend to harden or become more brittle when cooked. Potential risks to your dog include broken teeth, oral injury, choking, and gastrointestinal blockage. Click here to learn more about dogs and bones.

Dear Max,

My dog is always stirring up mischief. Do you have a list of things I should be on the lookout for so I can keep my dog safe this holiday?

Dear Camilla,

I tend to cause mischief too, so I think you'll find this list of potential holiday hazards helpful.

Max's Mini-Reviews

RUFF-N-TUFF REINDEER : Their noses may not light up but they sure do have a squeak! These plush reindeer put up with all the chomping I can dish out and keep me company while I'm waiting for those holiday treats I asked for this year.

SNOWMAN : It may be cold outside but there is nothing chilly about this fluffy guy. We can run, have some fun and not ever worry about him melting away.

GINGER : My humans say holiday cookies are bad for me but this year they gave me my very own gingerbread man. It doesn't taste like a cookie but it's so much fun to squeak that I don't mind.

K9 PINE : O, Christmas tree your leaves are so unchanging because you're a fun squeaker toy that will never loose it's green needles no matter how much I chew.
