ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

My dog Daisy hasn't been her happy self lately and I think she is stressed out. Can dogs be stressed? What can I do to help her?

-Beth

Dear Beth,

Yes, dogs can experience stress and anxiety just like we do. These feelings are usually brought on by new events like moving, a new pet in the home or being left alone. A simple way to ease your dogs' nerves is to use an appeasing pheromone. Check out this article to learn about dog appeasing pheromones and how they can help your dog cope with stress.

Dear Max,

My dog has trained me to always have treats. She is an Australian Shepherd and won’t do anything I want unless I have treats in my pocket or hand! What do I do?

Dear Samantha,

Yeah, I tried that too with my human, but eventually she figured out a way to make me behave with or without the cookies. But I think we have some good tips to help train your smart Aussie to quit training you. Click here to learn more about how not to become a trained treat giver.

ZANIES INTERACTIVE PUZZLE : I love toys and I love treats—this toy puts the two together! I have so much fun with this puzzle, I use my nose and paws to knock over and slide the wooden pegs and then get a reward for doing so. What dog doesn't love rewards? Calling all treat lovers and energetic dogs, this puzzle is for you!

SPRING ROLL : Finally a spring roll I can have! It may not be like the food but this toy definitely has bite! Bounce it, roll it, toss it—this toy can do it all and its crazy movements keep me on all four paws. Humans, you can keep your spring rolls, this one is all mine.

DOG FACT
Ancient Egyptians revered their dogs. When a pet dog would die, the owners shaved off their eyebrows, smeared mud in their hair, and mourned aloud for days.
