ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

My yellow lab, Simba, is only 8 years old but she really seems to be slowing down. She’s stiff when she gets up. She looks excited for our walks, but I almost have to drag her back home. I have to lift her because she won’t jump into the car. Is it possible she has arthritis?

-Claudia

Dear Claudia,

It certainly is. Arthritis is very common in older dogs, especially in large breeds. Your veterinarian will want to examine Simba to make sure there’s nothing else going on. She or he will then examine her gait and check all her bones and joints to confirm the diagnosis. There are many good and effective treatments for dogs with arthritis these days, so take heart. Dear Max,

My dog hasn't been herself lately, it's almost seems as if she is anxious. Is is possible for dogs to suffer from anxiety? Is there anytime I can do to help her calm down and return to her happy go lucky self?

–Shelly

Dear Shelly,

Yes, we canines can suffer from anxiety. I usually feel anxious during thunderstorms but I know of dogs who have continuing anxiety usually due to a change in environment like moving to a new home or being left alone. Luckily, our wonderful humans (you) can help us out. Check out this article to learn more about how to help your dog cope with canine anxiety.

Max's Mini-Reviews

ZANIES BERBER BONE : I may not be able to wear my heart on my sleeve but I can have it on my Berber Bone. This toy is perfect for tossing, chewing and my favorite—cuddling. I can see it now, my sweetheart and me, having a rousing game of fetch and then taking a nice nap. Sounds like a great Valentine’s Day to me.

ZAINES SUGAR PIE : I love a good squeak toy and what says "love" more than a heart? This toy looks good enough to eat, unfortunately it's not for eating but I'm happy with fetching and squeaking to my heart's delight.
